Frequently Asked Questions
SB Family Focus
What is supervised visitation?
Supervised visitation allows a parent to spend time with their child while a neutral, professional monitor is present to help ensure safety, structure, and compliance with the court order. Supervision is commonly used in high-conflict situations or when there are concerns related to safety, boundaries, or past conduct.
What is a supervised exchange?
A supervised exchange is a brief, structured handoff of the child between parents, supported by a professional monitor so parents do not have to interact directly. These exchanges are typically short and designed to reduce stress, conflict, and exposure to adult issues.
What does a professional monitor do?
A professional monitor provides a neutral presence and is responsible for:
Remaining within eyeshot and earshot as requiredMaintaining a calm, structured environmentSupporting compliance with the court orderEnding a visit if safety or child welfare becomes a concernDocumenting events in a factual, professional manner when reporting is requestedAre you trauma-informed?
Yes. SB Family Focus operates from a trauma-informed, child-first framework. Our approach prioritizes emotional safety, predictability, and calm regulation, especially in high-conflict or sensitive family dynamics.
Do you offer virtual monitoring?
Yes. SB Family Focus offers virtual monitoring when appropriate and when permitted by the court order or written agreement. Virtual options can be especially helpful for long-distance families, travel limitations, or situations where in-person contact increases stress or conflict.
What is the difference between a professional and non-professional monitor?
Non-professional monitors are often friends or family members and may lack neutrality, training, or consistent boundaries.
A professional monitor is a trained, neutral third party with experience in high-conflict cases, structured protocols, clear boundaries, and reliable documentation when required.Where do visits take place?
Visits may take place in public, child-appropriate locations such as parks, libraries, or family venues, or virtually when allowed. All locations must comply with the court order and be approved by the monitor as safe and appropriate.
Who may attend a supervised visit?
Attendance is typically limited to the visiting parent, the child or children, and the monitor. Additional individuals may attend only if:
The court order allows it, andAll required approvals are obtained in advanceWhat qualifications are required for professional monitors in California?
California sets standards for professional supervised visitation providers, including age requirements, background restrictions, and required training. SB Family Focus follows applicable California standards and uses a screening and training process designed for high-conflict and sensitive cases.
Is there an official court-approved list of monitors?
In most counties, courts do not maintain an official list of approved professional monitors. Any “approved list” you may see online is typically maintained by private organizations, not the court itself.
How do we get started?
All services require completion of a professional intake process before any visit or exchange occurs. This typically includes:
- Current court orders or stipulations- Valid photo identification- Emergency contact and child information- Safety concerns and boundaries- Transportation information, if applicableThis process protects the child, the parents, and the integrity of the monitoring services.Do you provide written reports or court documentation?
Professional documentation may be provided when requested and when aligned with the service agreement and court order. Court-related documentation, declarations, or testimony require additional scheduling, preparation time, and fees.
Will a visit be stopped if something becomes unsafe?
Yes. Child safety is the priority. If a visit escalates, boundaries are violated, or safety concerns arise, the monitor may pause or terminate the visit and document the reason in accordance with professional standards.
Are you attorneys or therapists?
No. SB Family Focus provides supervised visitation and monitoring services only. We do not offer legal advice, therapy, diagnoses, or medical services. Clients should consult licensed professionals for legal or clinical guidance.
How does scheduling and communication work?
Scheduling and communication are structured, documented, and professional. Visit details are confirmed in writing to reduce misunderstandings and minimize conflict. Parents are expected to maintain appropriate communication boundaries.
